Fujifilm’s Instax Mini Evo 2 makes instant photography more digital with touchscreen and video capture

Fujifilm just gave its most popular instant camera a serious digital upgrade. The Instax Mini Evo 2 now comes with a touchscreen, larger sensor, and a video feature that captures four seconds before each photo. It is set to arrive by the end of November for $289.95.

What’s new with the Instax Mini Evo 2?

The biggest change is the new 4.5 inch touchscreen, which replaces the original’s 3 inch display and rear buttons altogether, giving you more room to frame shots and review images. Mini Evo 2 is also the first Instax camera to use a touchscreen. The extra space makes it easier to browse the 10 lens effects and 10 film effects, which you can combine for 100 different style options.

You still get two physical dials and a film style print lever for that tactile Instax feel. A new Expanded View mode shows more of the scene around your frame to help with composition, though it does not actually widen the final photo. The printer delivers sharp 600 dpi output onto 2 by 3 inch instax mini film using Rich and Natural print modes.

What else can you do with it, and how much does it cost?

For the first time, an instax Evo camera can shoot video. Fujifilm calls it Immersive Movie, and it captures the four seconds right before you snap your photo. It maxes out around 560 x 992 pixels at 24 frames per second with no audio. You will also need a separately sold microSD card, since internal storage only holds up to 45 photos, not video.

A new 16 megapixel, 1/2.77 inch sensor and 21mm f/2.0 lens replace the original’s smaller 1/5 inch sensor. You also get a macro mode, selfie mirror, and adjustable exposure, white balance, and flash controls. It charges over USB-C and supports remote shooting and phone photo printing through Fujifilm’s companion app. It comes only in black color, with film and the microSD card sold separately.
