Souramana Ugadi 2021 / Gudi Padwa 2021


Ugadi is the Lunar New Year’s Day for the people of the Telugu and Kannada communities in India. The date of Ugadi is based on calculations of the position of the moon dating back to the 12th century. Ugadi begins on the first new moon sight, the Hindu festival is also celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

Ugadi has been an important and historic festival of the Hindus. The same day is observed as a New Year by Hindus in many other parts of India. For example, it is called Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra but sometimes observed a Gregorian day earlier because the lunar day starts and ends in the Hindu calendar according to the position of the moon. In Karnataka, the festival is celebrated as Yugadi and Telugu New year in Andra Pradesh.

The date of Ugadi depends on counts of the situation of the moon going back to twelfth century. Ugadi starts on the primary new moon after the Spring Equinox. Ugadi is celebrated the following morning as an Indian day begins from dawn.

This date generally falls in late March or early April in the western schedule and this date moon implies an adjustment in the seasons and basically implies Ugadi is a spring celebration.

In Maharashtra, it is known as Gudipadawa and might be called Gudi Padva in different regions of India.
