Should you buy a MacBook on Presidents Day?

Nothing’s certain and you can always get lucky, but these Presidents Day MacBook sales are likely to be your last chance to score an Apple laptop at a nice discount until Easter and other spring/early summer seasonal sales arrive. Presidents Day is one of the last major holidays before Easter, after all, and while MacBook deals do pop up year-round, you shouldn’t bet on that happening if you need a new computer now (or know you’ll need one soon).

Since Presidents Day is one of the few big holidays in the first quarter of the year, our recommendation is not to sleep on it. We don’t expect to see bargains as good as these Presidents Day MacBook deals until Easter in April or Memorial Day in May. If you see a MacBook you like at a worthy discount that brings it down to your budget, jump on it — just do some quick comparison shopping before you hit that “add to cart” button to make sure you’re actually getting a good deal.

How to choose a MacBook on Presidents Day

Apple has trimmed down its MacBook lineup in recent years, apparently eliminating the standard 12-inch MacBook altogether. That now leaves two models: The MacBook Air, which is the cheapest entry point into the MacOS laptop ecosystem, and the more premium MacBook Pro. Note, however, that the MacBook Pro is available in two sizes — 13 inches and 16 inches (which has replaced the last-gen 15-inch Pro) — and spans a wider range of price brackets and hardware capabilities than the more basic MacBook Air.

When shopping the many online Presidents Day MacBook sales, the choice between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro is fairly straightforward. Most users who just want a solid MacOS laptop will be happy with the MacBook Air, while those with more specific needs, such as tech professionals, video editors and creatives, might be more willing to pay for the more powerful hardware of the MacBook Pro line. That’s not to say that the MacBook Air is weak by any means, just that the Pro models offer beefier CPU options, increased RAM, larger SSDs, and discrete graphics cards.

Speaking of hardware, Apple rolled out its own new CPU, the M1 chip, last year, and refreshed both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines with this new processor. The M1 CPU is, in a word, incredible. But because it’s still pretty new, MacBooks with this processor are more expensive. The flip-side of that is that 2021 is perhaps the best year to shop for Presidents Day MacBook deals on last-gen models (including ones released in early 2020) that are sporting the older Intel Core CPUs. These are still highly capable machines and might be a better value for you depending on your needs and whether you can find one at a worthy discount.

If you’re willing to go a with a slightly older model to save even more, then you might get lucky and find some Presidents Day MacBook deals on recently discontinued models like the 12-inch MacBook, the 2019 MacBook Air, and the 15-inch MacBook Pro, as there is still some new old stock floating around. This inventory is scarce and sells out quickly, though, so you’ll have to move fast if you want to snatch one up.
